Signs of Summer
A few reasons why I know summer's on the horizon...
These striking flowers, which Ryan and I ogled over at the Museum of Life and Science's AfterHours event, NanoNights and MicroPints. After a little research, these head-turners are called alliums, which are actually in the onion family (really?). Apparently they're easy to grow and maintain, and they come in a wide variety of colors such as yellow, white, and pink. Guess I know what to look for when I get some garden space!
Mojitos. I had the sudden urge to head to the ABC store after work last Friday and pick up a little white rum. This was followed by a trip to the Teet for some mint leaves, club soda, and limes. Summer = mojitos.
Double rainbow! (Need I say more?!) I snapped this after my morning run the other day. Not only was it a double, but it fully arched across the sky. I pulled Ryan out of bed so he could trudge downstairs in his pajamas to see this glorious nature sighting. (He was less than enthused.)

Two Years!
Ryan and I celebrated our two-year anniversary yesterday (already?!). Two years have never gone by so fast. And like the wonderful husband he is, I received this beautiful arrangement at my office yesterday afternoon:
This weekend we celebrated by going to our favorite restaurant in town, 18 Seaboard, located in downtown Raleigh. Ryan always gets the filet mignon and I always get the salmon; we really should try new menu items, but we go so rarely (in order to appreciate it more), that we can't miss out on our favorites! Not only are the entrees fabulous, but some of the sides are to die for, including the goat cheese smashed red potatoes and cheddar grits. How can you resist that? For dessert, the special creme brulee of the night was pecan pie. Again, how can you resist that?!? They also surprised us with a delicious cake with "Happy Anniversary" scripted in chocolate. I. love. this. restaurant.
Ryan and I both got crafty with our anniversary gifts to one another this year. He made me this awesome pinning board (that we've now hung in the front halllway), strung with hemp so we can pin mementos, notes, and photos on it as time goes on. How to pin them? Lovely farm red clothespins. I had a custom print framed for him of our beloved North Carolina. There's a white silhouette of the state on a storm-gray background, with a red heart marked on Chapel Hill, where we got married. I like to think the heart encapsulates this entire area: it's where our friends and family are, where we met, where we grew up together, and where we call home to this day.
Not only that, but he gave me a beautiful handmade bag that I had marked on Pinterest. I think he could tell how much I loved it after I screamed upon opening it. Bonus points!!
And finally, here's a few photos to look back on from that wonderful day, 10/17/09. I still get butterflies when I see them.

Fall Floral
While shopping at Harris Teeter the other day, I had to pick up some of the fall-colored floral bouquets they finally had in stock. "The Teet" has great 3/$12 deals for mix-and-match bouquets; so, red, orange, and yellow it was! I love walking in and out of the house with these greeting me each way. First day of October tomorrow!

I Heart Hydrangeas.
Hydrangeas are one of my favorite blossoms, hands down. I wanted to use them in our wedding, but they were hard to come by for a reasonable price in October. Can't you just imagine a gorgeous hydrangea bouquet of vintage purples and greens? (::sigh::)
Anyways, I was so excited to hear that my sister-in-law, Megan, was planning to use blue hydrangeas for her wedding this past May. The aisle was lined with these gorgeous, lush plants with huge bright blue blossoms; and to make it better, I got to take two of them home with me! So I immediately got them planted in the front yard, and they looked magnificent. I must mention that North Carolina's red clay for soil didn't help much with this task. I had to pitch rocks and clay over my shoulder in order to get them planted (not pleasant). Martha's Vineyard is covered with hydrangeas everywhere you look; I'm so envious of their sandy soil and cool climate.
A few weeks after I planted them, however, the heat of summer totally killed my blooms and "burned" a bunch of the leaves, so I had to significantly prune them back and start from scratch. Two things I've learned about these flowering plants: 1) They are one of the prissiest, most high-maintenance plants on this earth, and 2) They can look completely dead and you can cut them back to nothing, but they'll grow back eventually. Now that the roots of the plants have become more established, and I'm watering them like crazy (every day), they've started coming back in full bloom. And to my delight, they decided purple is the new trend this season.
